The Eye of God Giant Quartz Dome

The Eye of God is a sacred site where the Serrano Natives would go to 2000 years ago for sacred ceremony. At this sacred site was once a giant quartz dome that rose majestically high on top of a hill. It was said the dome was once dozens of feet high (check out that link for an account showing a photo energetic imprint of it’s possible height), but in the 1800’s the Natives were brutally murdered and the gold miners at the time blew up the sacred site as an act of desecration and for their greedy hunt for gold. They say wherever there are quartz deposits, gold is usually found. What’s left at this sacred site is still a considerable mound of quartz, but nothing as large as what it once used to be.

When you Google Map the Eye of God (at Baldwin Lake, CA, near Big Bear Lake), you will see a big white quartz speck on the map shining bright amongst the brownish green hilly terrain.

If you missed my previous blog about arriving to this area (Big Bear Lake, CA) you can check it out here. After the first day of gemstone panning, my hubby and I decided to go hiking. But we wanted to hike to the Eye of God for our first activity of the day after the intriguing story the shop lady gave us the previous day. Curiosity filled our minds and there was also an internal calling within to visit the Eye of God.

The surrounding roads around the entrance of the trails to get to the Eye of God are not paved! So be careful if you don’t have a 4WD SUV. I was thankful I had a phone signal in the area because I was able to Google Map the exact spot and direction by looking for the white crystal spot on the map. Due to our starting point, we didn’t take the typical trail route directions given on the Internet, so I’m glad I was able to map it out or we would’ve been wandering around a bit in the wrong direction.

While hiking up to the top of this sacred quartz mound, you know you are coming close once you start to see a sprinkling of bright white quartz scattered about like crystal ice. The closer you get to the Eye of God, the more quartz you see all over the ground. I’ve never experienced such a thing! The chunks of quartz extended over 100ft around the dome (probably from the original explosion, snow, rain and erosion that has occurred from the past 150 years! The energy was inviting, sacred and mysterious, and I felt extremely reverent the closer we approached the sacred site.

Standing on top of a segment of the remnants of the Eye of God quartz dome.

After walking around the Eye of God taking videos and photos, I sat on top of the remnants of what once was this giant dome and took out some of my crystals from my travel kit to meditate. I placed them on top of the quartz mound to charge them as well under the sun.

(Btw, I noticed the flying bugs around this quartz mound wouldn’t stop trying to land on my garnet bracelet – see photo below! I read somewhere that “fairies” love garnet… hmm, what do you think?)

With my eyes closed I could feel the energies of the past and felt a presence of events that had happened through time. I felt called to send energetic healing to this place, to the desecration of the sacred site, to the spirits of the Natives and to those killed or hurt at this rock due to violence and greed.

Charging some of my crystals and bracelets on top of the Eye of God quartz. See the inclusions of hematite on top of this segment I placed my crystals on? It makes some of the areas of the dome orange and reddish in color.

If you ever get a chance to come here, I suggest you make a visit and experience the beauty of this sacred spot as a place for meditation. Around the Eye of God are evergreen trees (I think they’re protectors! :P) and mountain vistas of the surrounding landscape. While we were there, nobody was around, so it was a great place to be at one with yourself and feel the energies.

Hiking and Big Boulders

After visiting the Eye of God, we drove back closer to our hotel and hiked near Big Bear Lake. On this trail (I forgot the name, but it had a discreet entrance from the main road), I clambered and sat on top giant boulders while trying to overcome a slight unease of being up so high in the mountains. The higher elevation and being amongst such gargantuan rocks felt so humbling!

You can’t tell, but I’m sitting on a giant boulder on top of the mountain!

Another vantage point near the top! Lots of giant boulders everywhere! A person is about 1/4 the size of the photo.

Down by Big Bear Lake, there is a lovely peaceful place called, Boulder Bay Park (by Treasure Island) where you can ground yourself on the beach, go kayaking or have a picnic. What I loved about this park were the giant boulders scattered about the grassy areas that were flat on top. They looked like giant stone healing beds and I couldn’t resist asking hubby to take a photo! I also had the opportunity to mediate on the boulder beds and created a pyrite and chrysocolla healing grid for the lake and this area in general (see photo below).

Boulder Bay Park at Big Bear Lake. I created a crystal grid on top of one of the boulders with some locally bought pyrite and chrysocolla. There a lot of shops in town where you can buy rough crystals!

If in the future, if you’re in the SoCal area and want to take a nature grounding getaway to connect with the Earth, I highly suggest Big Bear Lake as a nice short trip! It’s only a two hour drive away and they have plenty of activities and shops filled with Native American gifts and rough crystals!

Until next time, I hope you enjoyed my little story!
